Sandugo Shrine

The Sandugo Shrine is a historic site featuring a stunning set of meticulously crafted sculpture.

Set in the village of Bool, this marker, also referred to as the Legazpi-Sikatuna Blood Compact Shrine, commemorates the Sandugo, a blood compact performed between local chieftain Datu Sikatuna and Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi, as a pact of trust, friendship and goodwill.

The blood compact was an ancient traditional custom designed to formalize or affirm an agreement or treaty, wherein both parties shed and mix a small amount of their blood with wine, and drink the mixture together to seal their mutual trust and friendship.

Recognized as one of the earliest international treaties of friendship, the shrine features life-sized bronze sculptures created by National Artist Napoleon Abueva, illustrating the significant event that took place on March 16, 1565.

While on the site, guests can enjoy panoramic views of the sea and capture memorable photos with the monument and nearby scenic spots.

Visiting the Sandugo Shrine provides a meaningful insight into Philippine history, set against a beautiful coastal setting.

This destination is commonly included in Bohol countryside tours.
