La Santisima Trinidad Church

Established in 1795, the Catholic Parish Church of Santissima Trinidad located in Loay is recognized as one of the oldest Catholic churches in Bohol.

Designated as a National Historical Landmark in 2003 and a National Cultural Treasure in 2013, the Church of the Holy Trinity Parish complex is situated on a plateau overlooking the sea, near the confluence of the Loboc River.

Similar to many Spanish churches constructed during that era, the church features a cruciform design and possesses two facades: the older facade is adorned with low relief, while the newer one appears to have been completed later, as its upper section is made of reinforced concrete. The entire structure is topped with cement statues representing various virtues.

The bell tower stands as a distinct structure, positioned a short distance away from the church. The interior showcases trompe-l'œil paintings alongside Biblical scenes, and the altars are designed in the neoclassical style.

On October 15, 2013, a strong earthquake inflicted considerable damage to the church, leading to the collapse of its facade. The Diocese of Tagbilaran, in partnership with government agencies dedicated to cultural preservation, worked diligently to restore the building, including its coral stone walls and elaborate ceiling paintings, and it was officially reopened to the public in 2020.
