Balicasag Island

Located just off the coast of Panglao, Balicasag Island is a coral-fringed haven that provides a peaceful retreat into nature and the ocean.

Declared a marine sanctuary since 1985, the island offers an underwater landscape that few places can match, teeming with sea turtles, barracudas, and vibrant coral reefs.

The island’s serene waters and shallow reefs create a snorkeling paradise that is safe for both adults and children with appropriate supervision, allowing visitors to swim alongside sea turtles while witnessing the expansive coral gardens that host a variety of aquatic life.

And for diving enthusiasts, the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island feature two prominent dive sites—Marine Sanctuary and Black Forest—renowned for their dramatic drop-offs and swirling schools of jackfish.

Spanning just 25 hectares, visitors can walk around the island in less than an hour, yet it offers a wealth of other activities, including kayaking and paddleboarding, or simply wandering inland to visit the historic lighthouse and engage with the local fishing community. Moreover, guests can cap the day with a trip to nearby Virgin Island’s sandbar for a full-day adventure.

Most visitors lodge in Panglao, but for a more immersive experience, the island’s lone resort—Balicasag Island Dive Resort, operated by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA)—adds a touch of rustic comfort, featuring beachfront cottages shaded by palm trees and direct access to dive sites.

Balicasag is ideal for eco-tourism lovers, with minimal infrastructure, community-driven tourism, and a commitment to marine conservation. While the island’s rich biodiversity is a major draw, the resilience of its small community truly shapes the island’s character. Locals offer boat services, sell simple snacks, and share stories about reef stewardship passed down through generations.

Balicasag is more than just a destination—it represents a promise of coexistence between nature and community. In your search for places that blend adventure with advocacy, this island stands out as one Bohol’s most authentic narratives.
