Getting Around
Most people traveling from other countries to the Philippines usually arrive at Manila’s NAIA airport or Mactan-Cebu International Airport. To get to other destinations from within the Philippines, the following briefly describes the general options.
Inter-Island Travel Options
For inter-island travel, one can transfer between islands by ferry for shorter distances, or by domestic flights for longer journeys, with major carriers like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia.
Flights: Recommended for long distances and can be surprisingly cheap, connecting major islands and smaller airports. Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia are the main domestic carriers.
Ferries: A great option for short island hops and a way to travel between islands, especially in areas like the Visayas. Book tickets in advance, especially for longer routes, and be aware of potential delays.
Inter-City and Inter-Town Transportation Options
For inter-city or long-distance travel on land, provincial buses are a cost-effective option, while the country has a limited rail system.
Buses: Used for travel between cities and provinces, with different classes offering varying levels of comfort.
Train: Also used for travel between cities and provinces, but only within limited routes and schedules.
Private vehicle: If driving your own vehicle, you can use Google maps or Waze for directions.
Transportation Options Within Cities and Towns
For travel within towns and cities, you will find jeepneys (iconic minibusses), tricycles (motorbikes with sidecars), taxis, and the popular Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS), or ride-hailing services. For more information on TNVS providers, and in which provinces and cities they operate, please visit this page.
Jeepneys: Iconic and colorful minibusses used for getting around cities and towns.
Taxis and TNVS: Metered taxis are available, but using TNVS ride-hailing apps can provide a more convenient and transparent experience, especially in major cities.
Tricycles: Motorbikes with a sidecar, commonly used for short journeys within towns and cities.
Metro System: Manila is currently the only city in the Philippines with a metro system.
Private vehicle: If driving your own vehicle, you can use Google maps or Waze for directions.
