Hinulugang Taktak is one of the Philippines’ most iconic natural waterfalls and a cherished cultural landmark, located in the scenic city of Antipolo, Rizal.
Established as a National Park in 1952, and declared a Protected Landscape in 2000, Hinulugang Taktak has long been a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a refreshing escape into nature combined with rich historical significance.
Just a short drive from Metro Manila, Hinulugang Taktak Nature and Adventure Park, as it is formally called, was the first stop on our second visit to the city of Antipolo, where we spent a leisurely morning admiring the falls up close and wandering about its surroundings.
The park is open to visitors from 7:00am to 4:00pm, Tuesday through Sunday. It is closed on Mondays for maintenance.
Early morning on a weekday is the ideal time to visit to steer clear of crowds and capture softer lighting for photography.
Parking is available but is located outside the premises, requiring a short walk to get to the entrance.
There is no entrance fee and advance booking is not required – simply sign in at the entrance and retain your pass for exit.
There is a parking fee, though, of ₱45.00 for cars and vans, and ₱20.00 for motorcycles, which you can pay anytime or upon exit.
Adventure areas such as the Canopy Walk are designated only for individuals aged 14 and older.
The falls is located about a hundred steps or so down from the entrance. While going down may not pose a concern, going back up the long and winding stairs may be challenging for the elderly or those with mobility issues.
Hinulugang Taktak is located at Daang Bakal Road in Barangay de la Paz, Antipolo City, about 24km away or a little over an hour’s drive from where I stay in Mandaluyong City.
We left a little before 8:00am and arrived at the parking area by 9:15am.
The name “Hinulugang Taktak” translates to “the falling of the clock”, a name rooted in local legend. According to folklore, a clock once fell from a church tower and landed near the waterfall, giving the site its unique name.
Over the years, Hinulugang Taktak has witnessed many changes, including periods of environmental decline. However, restoration efforts by the government and local communities have revitalized the area, preserving its natural beauty and cultural importance.
In response to past environmental challenges, significant initiatives have been undertaken to restore and protect Hinulugang Taktak.
