Corella is one of forty-seven (47) municipalities (along with one city) comprising the province of Bohol in the Central Visayas. The town is politically subdivided into eight (8) barangays, and is a part of the 1st Congressional District of Bohol.
Corella is known primarily as the home of the Philippine Tarsier, the world’s smallest primate, which can still be found in their natural habitat in Barangays Canapnapan, Cancatac, Tanday, Sambog and Poblacion. Because the species is threatened by habitat destruction and hunting, the tarsier has been included since 1991 by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as among the national protected wildlife species.
As such, a 7.4 hectare Philippine Tarsier sanctuary run by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation was established in 1996 in Barangay Canapnapan, about three kilometers from the town proper, whose aim is to conserve, promote research and ensure the continued existence of this already endagered species.
Corella’s distance from Tagbilaran City, the provincial capital, is ten (10) kilometers and travel time from the capital is about fifteen (15) minutes.
