Known as the “Shrine City in the Philippines”, Dapitan holds historical importance as the site where José Rizal was exiled by Spanish colonial authorities due to his potential to incite revolutionary activities.

In 2011, the National Historical Commission designated a specific area of the city, along with its heritage structures, as a Heritage Zone or Historic Center.

Perhaps the most famous attraction in this center is the Rizal Park and Shrine, a protected landscape and memorial dedicated to the national hero Dr. José P. Rizal, who spent four years on a farm site here during his exile from 1892 to 1896.

Another noteworthy site to visit is the “Punto de Disembarco”, the location where Rizal arrived when he was brought to Dapitan to begin his exile.

Additionally, the city boasts numerous picturesque white sand beaches along its extensive coastline, including the two island barangays Silinog and Aliguay. The most

Dapitan is one of two cities (along with twenty-five (25) municipalities) that comprise the province of Zamboanga del Norte in the Zamboanga Peninsula. The city is politically subdivided into fifty (50) barangays, and is a part of the 1st Congressional District of Zamboanga del Norte.

Dapitan is known as the “Shrine City in the Philippines”, having been historically significant as the place where the national hero, José Rizal, lived while in exile.

The city’s value lies in the fact that the original estate of Rizal has been declared a National Shrine and is presently being administered by the National Historical Institute. The shrine is a major historic tourist destination, ranking second only to Fort Santiago in Manila in terms of number of visitors.

And while the Rizal Shrine is continuously attracting both domestic and foreign tourists, the city is an attraction by itself. Well paved roads, stretching from the coastal towns in the north towards the interior, have turned Dapitan into a showcase of beauty and cleanliness. Dapitan Bay, with its expanse of pristine beaches and spectacular sunsets, is also a constant attraction to tourists.

Cebuano (Visayan) is the dominant dialect spoken by the majority, though Ilonggo, Subano, Tagalog, Tausog, Ilocano and Chavacano are still used sparingly throughout the city. Local Chinese still use Mandarin and Cantonese. A majority of Dapitanons are at ease with the English language.
