Iguig is one of twenty-eight (28) municipalities (along with one city) that comprise the province of Cagayan in the Cagayan Valley. The town is politically subdivided into twenty-three (23) barangays, and is a part of the 3rd Congressional District of Cagayan.
Iguig is a quaint little town whose great historic landmarks are conspicous to commuters along the Maharlika Highway. These include the historic centuries-old parish church of St. James perched atop the popular Calvary Hill, in which the 14 Stations of the Cross are depicted in life-size concrete monuments.
The aged brick stairway to the west of the church was formerly used by visiting Spanish dignitaries who travelled the various barangays aboard bancas (native boats) which plied up and down the Cagayan River. Also of interest within the complex is the mildew-coated Rectory well that was constructed in 1768, then the only source of the town’s drinking water.
