The town was officially renamed from Montalban to Rodriguez in 1982 in honor of the late Senate President Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Sr., though its old name is still widely referred to.

Montalban or Rodriguez acts as the eastern doorstep of Metro Manila, offering a quick, budget-friendly escape about an hour and a half drive from the national capital region.

A vibrant and diverse destination known for its mountainous terrain, rich history, and numerous attractions, following is a brief guide highlighting what makes Rodriguez special:

  • Wawa Dam and Gorge: A historic, gravity-fed dam surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, providing a picturesque setting for picnics and a glimpse into local history. It is a popular spot for nature photography, boat rides, and swimming in the river.
  • Mt. Pamitinan and Mt. Binacayan: These are famous for hiking trails that offer stunning, panoramic views of the Sierra Madre and the Wawa River, often with a sea of clouds.
  • Montalban Trilogy/Undeca Climb: For intense thrill-seekers, the area offers 11 major peaks, including Mt. Ayaas, Mt. Sipit, and Mt. Oro, known for rocky trails and ridge hiking.
  • Avilon Zoo: The largest zoological institution in the Philippines in terms of land area and collection of animals, located in Sitio Gulod, Brgy. San Isidro. A must-visit for families, offering a wide range of animals and a great place for a day out with the family.
  • Secret River: A hidden, scenic spot near Wawa Dam, accessible by a 5-15 minute boat ride.

The town is known as the home of the legendary figure Bernardo Carpio, who is said to have separated the mountains of Pamitinan and Binacayan.

The Pamitinan Cave in the Wawa area is where Andres Bonifacio and other Katipuneros held an assembly to declare independence from Spain.

In terms of local cuisine, Rodriguez is known for its delicious dishes, especially in the bustling night market, where visitors can visit local spots for bulalo or pancit to refuel after a hike.

The area has numerous karinderyas and fast-food options like Jollibee, Greenwich, and Mang Inasal near the Montalban Town Center.

In terms of accommodation, the town offers a variety of hotels and resorts, catering to different preferences and budgets.

Whether you are looking for a challenging hike or a relaxing day by the river, Rodriguez offers a subtle blend of urban and rural experiences, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking adventure, culture, and relaxation.
