Uyugan is one of six (6) municipalities that comprise the province of Batanes in the Cagayan Valley. The town is politically subdivided into four (4) barangays, and is a part of the lone Congressional District of Batanes.

Uyugan is the fourth and last town in Batan island, where traditional Ivatan houses line the entire stretch of the main road. This town pioneered drift net fishing for dibang and it is the site of the thriving palek (local wine) industry.

The traditional building of house through cooperativism called kamañidungan is still strongly practiced in Uyugan.
