Abra is one of six provinces comprising the Cordillera Administrative Region ( CAR ).
The province is subdivided into twenty-seven (27) municipalities, with a total of 303 barangays represented as a lone congressional district. The seat of the provincial government is at the capital town of Bangued.
Insulated by rugged mountainous terrain on both sides, nature has remained pristine in Abra and life goes on in a relaxed pace away from the humdrum of urban cosmopolitan living.
This landlocked province teems with impressive natural resources, having the largest area of alienable and disposable land in the region, totalling 98,420 hectares or more than a fourth of the entire region’s alienable and disposable lands. More than half of its land are forest lands which are repositories of a myriad of forest products and minerals such as gold, clay guano, rock phosphate and cement raw materials.
Abra is also known as the “Natural Dye Capital of the Philippines” because it is blessed with abundant natural dye-yielding plants. Natural dyes are extracted from the barks, leaves, fruits, and roots of these plants, and used to color food, beverages, textiles, cosmetics, furniture, and pharmaceutical products.
Another revival project related to the province’s natural dye industry is loom weaving and embroidery, using ethnic designs and fabrics.
The province of Abra is envisioned to be developed as the North Gateway to the region, highlighting the rich cultural and historical heritage of both the upland and lowland Cordilleras.
