Overview Tourism Quick Facts Geography Images

Agusan del Sur is one of five provinces that comprise the Caraga Region ( Region XIII ).

The province is subdivided into thirteen (13) municipalities and one city, with a total of 314 barangays represented as a lone congressional district. The seat of the provincial government is at the capital town of Prosperidad.

Agusan del Sur is the fourth largest province in the country, endowed with rich natural resources contained in its vast agricultural, forest, and marsh lands, ideal as an agro-processing center and an eco-tourism destination.

The province is a promising paradise, the land of the proud and brave Agusanons, a land of multi-ethnic and cultural diversity. It is hidden in the vastness of endless green carpets and undulating forest cover which envelope its populace with fresh mountain air.

The southern part teems with swamps and lakes, forming one of the largest wetlands in Southern Asia. These areas do not only function as a natural water holding pond, but also have some of the most diverse wild life in the country.

Agusan del Sur is not just rich in natural resources but also of the abundance of tales on archaeological finds unearthed in the sixties. Written accounts reveal that 12th century celadon plates, blue and white Ming jars and gold ornaments found along the river banks and burial mounds were sold for a song by the natives at that time. Gold was always connected with the gods and the well-being of the Agusanons.
