Recognizing its rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and ecological importance, Paoay Lake and its surrounding area was established as a Protected Landscape in August 04, 2025 under Republic Act 12230, elevating its status from a former national park and providing stronger legal protection.
Located within the municipality of Paoay in Ilocos Norte, about 3 km away from the sea, it is one of the largest natural lakes in the region, covering a surface area of 386 hectares with an average depth of 6 metres.
The lake is home to crucial components of aquatic ecosystems that provide habitat, stabilize sediments, form food webs, and influence water clarity. Various aquatic plants grow in the lake, and fish found in the lake include tilapia, catfish, and mudfish.
On the slopes surrounding the lake can be found plants and trees that are used for reforestation, erosion control, furniture making, and traditional medicine. The park is also inhabited by both resident bird species alongside migratory visitors.
The designation was enacted for the preservation of its unique flora, fauna, and surrounding sand dunes, as well as to secure the area for future generations, promote eco-tourism and community engagement, and ensure harmonious human-land interaction.
