Museo Dabawenyo is the people’s museum of Davao City, showcasing the rich history, culture, and heritage of the city from indigenous origins to contemporary times.

Museo Dabawenyo was officially established in 2008, with the goal of acquiring, preserving, and displaying historical artifacts, artworks, and cultural specimens, fostering appreciation and academic study of Davao City’s heritage for local residents and visitors alike.

The museum was originally housed in the historic Court of First Instance Building, a Spanish-era edifice built in 1849 that previously served as a courthouse, provincial capitol, and city hall.

In 2019, Museo Dabawenyo was temporarily relocated to the Folk Arts Museum of the Philippine Women’s College Davao due to the repurposing of the original site.

Its current interim location is along Mabini Street beside Davao City National High School, while preparations are underway for a new five-storey building.

The museum highlights Davao’s vibrant past and cultural diversity across multiple galleries, which include:

• Indigenous Heritage: Showcasing traditional costumes, crafts, and artifacts from Davao’s recognized tribes, including the Bagobo, Mandaya, and other indigenous communities.
• Colonial History: Featuring artifacts and narratives from the Spanish, Portuguese, and American colonial eras.
• Contemporary Davao: Illustrating modern advancements, economic development, and the evolving identity of the city.
• Art and Multimedia: Displaying selected artworks from contemporary Dabawenyos and videos on LCD screens to provide context and interpretive insights.

The museum continues to present exhibits that emphasize the city’s history and culture, featuring a curated display titled “A History of Davao City in 50 Objects.”

Museo Dabawenyo serves as a hub for education, catering to students, researchers, and tourists alike. It offers guided tours, workshops, and interactive activities aimed at enhancing a deeper understanding of Davao’s rich history, ethnic diversity, and cultural heritage.

Additionally, the museum plays a vital role in promoting cultural tourism by highlighting authentic local traditions and historical narratives.

Visitors can enjoy guided tours that offer insights into the exhibits and their historical significance. While photography is typically permitted in certain sections, restrictions may apply in the main galleries.
