St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr Parish Church

The San Lorenzo Church in Balagtas, Bulacan—formally known as the Parish of St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr—is one of the oldest Augustinian-founded churches in the province, established in 1596.

The church is dedicated to Saint Lawrence, a Christian deacon martyred in Rome on August 10, 258 AD, during Emperor Valerian’s persecution. He is one of the most venerated saints in Catholic tradition, remembered for his courage, charity, and legendary death on a gridiron.

It remains an active parish under the Diocese of Malolos, with its principal feast celebrated every August 10 in honor of St. Lawrence.

Historical Background

Established in 1621, the church was originally part of a convent run by the Augustinian Friars since May 12, 1596.

Balagtas town itself, formerly Bigaa, was originally part of the Augustinian mission territories in Bulacan.

Locally referred to as Balagtas Church, it showcases an 18th-century Baroque architectural style, featuring a unique façade with a prominent recessed arch and semicircular windows, and houses relics of St. Lawrence.

In contrast to other Baroque churches, this structure is distinctive for its absence of pilasters that typically segment the façade.

The church has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries due to natural wear and historical events, the most recent of which was the renovation of its façade and altar in 2022.

The parish also features a Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, highlighting its role as a spiritual center in Balagtas.

In brief, St. Lawrence Church serves as a significant heritage site while also functioning as a vibrant parish center, blending centuries-old Baroque architecture with the spiritual needs of the local community.
