Manta Bowl Shoal

Manta Bowl: A Submerged Paradise of Pelagics

Manta Bowl Shoal stands out as one of the premier dive destinations in the Philippines, renowned for its encounters with giant manta rays, whale sharks, and other pelagic species in a vibrant and dynamic underwater environment.

Located about 7 km off the northern coast of Ticao Island, this shoal spans an 84-hectare underwater seamount that serves as a vital cleaning and feeding station where majestic manta rays and seasonal whale sharks gather to feed on the plankton-rich waters.

A cleaning station is a specific area on a coral reef or rocky formation where small cleaner fish or shrimp help remove parasites, bacteria, and dead skin from larger marine clients, such as manta rays, sharks, and turtles. These stations are vital to ecosystem health, reducing disease and fostering a mutual relationship where the cleaners receive food and the clients gain improved hygiene.

Established as a dive site in 2002, this exceptional diving spot was once known only to local fishermen but has now become a magnet for manta ray and pelagic marine life enthusiasts.

The location is situated at depths between 14 and 23 meters, while the underwater seamount ascends from depths of 200 meters. The dive is classified as an advanced drift dive, and the presence of strong currents necessitate the use of reef hooks to stay in place during cleaning and feeding station dives.

Marine Life Highlights

Reef and oceanic manta rays frequent the cleaning stations; approximately 280 individual mantas have been documented at this site.

Occasional sightings of whale sharks enhance the experience of encountering large marine animals; approximately 250 whale sharks have been observed in the vicinity.

Other Pelagics, including thresher sharks, hammerheads, white-tip sharks, barracudas, eagle rays, schools of tuna and jacks abound in the vibrant reef ecosystem, which features coral gardens, sponges, gorgonians, and a diverse array of macrofauna including nudibranchs, seahorses, flatworms, and shrimps.

Dive Conditions

Currents are strong and variable, so reef hooks are advised for safety and prolonged observation on the seafloor. Drift diving is particularly appealing for seasoned divers.

Visibility generally ranges from 10–30 meters depending on season, while water temperature hover around 26–28°C (79–82°F), with air temperatures ranging 27–30°C (81–86°F).

This site is recommended exclusively for Advanced Open Water divers or those with equivalent drift diving experience.

Typical dive durations are around 30 to 45 minutes at the site, with full-day excursions that include transportation and multiple dives.

The optimal time to visit is from December to May, when the seas are calmer and megafauna activity peaks.

Access and Logistics

The shoal is situated between Ticao Island in Masbate and Donsol in the southwestern coast of Sorsogon.

Most dive boats depart from resorts located in or near San Jacinto, which serves as the primary base with daily boat dives. Travel time is about 20-30 minutes.

Donsol offers an alternative base with day-trip options to Manta Bowl, often combined with whale shark snorkeling adventures. Travel time is about 1.5-2 hours.

The typical travel route involves a flight from Manila or Cebu to Legazpi or Masbate, a boat ride to Ticao Island, and followed by a boat transfer to the dive site.

Summary

Manta Bowl Shoal provides one of the few consistent encounters with manta rays in the Philippines, along with opportunities to see whale sharks and large pelagic fish.

Its vibrant coral ecosystems, strong currents, and distinctive seamount environment make it a premier destination for adventurous divers and underwater photographers.

For arranging dives and accommodations, divers can coordinate with resorts located in or near San Jacinto, like Ticao Island Resort and Dive Center, or Donsol-based dive operators, depending on the itinerary.
