Nestled deep within the verdant and rugged terrains of Alamada, Asik-Asik Falls is one of the Philippines’ most enchanting natural wonders, showcasing a blend of extraordinary beauty and a serene environment.
In contrast to most waterfalls that cascade from rivers or streams, Asik-Asik is known for its remarkable spectacle where water seemingly springs forth directly from the crevices of a 140-meter-wide fern-covered cliff.
This phenomenon creates a mesmerizing curtain-like effect, with water gently cascading down the rocky slopes in delicate streams that glisten in the sunlight.
Rising some 20 meters high, the falls is surrounded by thick vegetation and cloaked in moss and ferns that drape the cliff face, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
At the base of the falls, visitors can relish the cool mist and invigorating atmosphere. A shallow pool beckons guests to wade or swim in its cold, crystal-clear waters. Note, however, that access to the bottom is restricted after 4:00 PM for safety reasons, so plan your visit accordingly.
Although it has been known to local villagers for a long time, it was only officially unveiled to the public around late 2010, after forest fires and floods cleared the surrounding foliage. Its name is derived from the Hiligaynon word asik, which translates to ‘sprinkle’.
Getting to Asik-Asik is an adventure in itself. The falls are situated on the slopes of Mount Ragang, accessible via a rugged journey from Alamada town proper or the nearby town of Midsayap.
Travelers typically embark on a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) ride through muddy, winding paths, which can be challenging yet rewarding for those in search of an authentic off-the-beaten-path experience. The remoteness of the falls adds to its charm, making every visitor feel like an explorer stumbling upon a hidden paradise.
Thereafter, visitors would have to endure a 30-40 minutes trek from the trailhead to the falls, depending on one’s pace. Reaching the base requires descending a steep trail with over 370 steps. The path winds through verdant forests, providing glimpses of local flora and fauna, perfectly setting the tone for a day immersed in nature.
What sets Asik-Asik apart is its remarkable origin. There is no visible stream flowing from above the cliff; instead, countless springs burst through the rock face, cascading down in fine, misty sheets. Locals often describe it as “water appearing out of nowhere,” a phenomenon that has fueled both scientific curiosity and folklore.
The curtain-like cascades, misty atmosphere, and vibrant greenery make it a dream for landscape photographers and drone enthusiasts alike.
Asik-Asik Falls transcends being just a tourist attraction; it embodies the mystery and resilience of nature. Its pristine beauty serves as a reminder that some wonders are beyond explanation, existing solely to evoke a sense of wonder. For those who dare to brave the journey, Asik-Asik Falls guarantees an unforgettable experience filled with discovery.
Notice of Temporary Closure
On February 11, 2026, the provincial government of Cotabato convened in Alamada to address the current status of Asik-Asik Falls, which has been temporarily closed due to reports of landslide incidents.
The meeting focused on ongoing rehabilitation efforts based on the results of geological and risk assessments conducted by relevant agencies, the safety measures to set in place in response to the site evaluations, and the necessary preparations for the responsible reopening of this tourist destination.
It also emphasized that the Provincial Government’s main priority is public safety, and continues to monitor the situation through close collaboration with local authorities and the community, in order to promote safe, orderly, and sustainable tourism in the province.
