Anyone interested in traditional Filipino craftsmanship will find the Yakan Weaving Village in Zamboanga City a delightful experience.
A visit to the village offers an opportunity to watch skilled artisans at work, learn about the history of the culture, appreciate the artwork, and find some genuinely one-of-a-kind mementos to bring back home.
A variety of distinctive Yakan fabrics in vivid colors and intricate geometric patterns are available in the village, all hand-loomed using traditional age-old methods. Because every piece is handmade and each weaver has a unique style, no two items are exactly alike.
The elaborate designs are unique to Yakan culture, originally reserved only for use in tribal clothing. Due to growing interest from both domestic and foreign visitors, though, the artisans have expanded their craft and now produce a wide array of items including wall coverings, table runners, placemats, belts, scarves, bags, and purses.
The village also offers a variety of other cultural items, including brassware, antiques, traditional Muslim swords, wood carvings, pottery, and ceramics.
The village is located just seven (7) kilometers from the city proper along the west coast road.
