Basco Lighthouse: The Beacon of Batanes

The Basco Lighthouse in Naidi is one of three active lighthouses in the province of Batanes, the others being located in Mahatao and on the island of Sabtang.

The iconic structure is a six-story edifice with spiral staircases that ascend to a viewing deck on the fifth floor, providing expansive vistas of Baluarte Bay, Mount Iraya, and the verdant landscape of Batan Island.

Adjacent to the 66-ft tower lies the lighthouse keeper’s dwelling, built like a traditional Ivatan home with stone and rubble masonry.

The site once hosted American telegraph facilities during the early 1900s, which were obliterated during the bombings of World War II. Some of the surviving structures have been transformed into quaint cafés and local enterprises, merging cultural heritage with hospitality.

The optimal time to visit is just prior to sunset—when the golden hour casts a warm glow over the hills and sea, creating ideal conditions for photography and quiet reflection.

And the perfect way to wind down before heading back to town is to enjoy local coffee brews accompanied by Ivatan-inspired dishes at the al-fresco tables nearby.
