Pinaglabanan Shrine: Museo El Deposito
Museo El Deposito: Exploring Manila’s Subterranean Past

Museo El Deposito is an immersive infrastructure and history museum located within the historic Pinaglabanan Shrine complex in San Juan City, Metro Manila.

Managed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), this specialized institution is built directly above El Deposito, a massive 19th-century underground water reservoir.

It stands as one of the few museums in the world dedicated entirely to the history of public waterworks and civil engineering.

Museum Exterior

The exterior façade of Museo El Deposito is intentionally simple, modern, and understated, designed to harmonize with the sweeping greenery of the surrounding Pinaglabanan Shrine complex.

Standing on a small curved concrete platform beside the entrance of the building are two life-sized bronze statues, engaged in discussion or planning.

The figures likely represent individuals connected with the planning, construction, or management of Manila’s historic water supply system and the El Deposito reservoir.

Beside the statues is an accessible ramp and walkway leading to the entrance of the underground reservoir, which we shall be discussing later.

Behind the statues is a neatly trimmed landscaped garden, akin to the green space that characterizes most of the shrine complex.

Museum Interior Layout

The museum building houses two storeys of exhibition spaces, organized as follows.

The ground level includes the following facilities:

  • Lobby and Reception Area: The main welcoming and check-in desk for visitors.
  • Audio-Visual Room: An introductory theater space that projects short video clips and narrative presentations on the history and construction of the 19th-century Carriedo Waterworks system.
  • Resource Center: An area featuring archival photographs, historical prints, documents, and scale models related to the reservoir and waterworks.

The second level features three main galleries and a virtual reality room:

  • Gallery 1 (Life before the Waterworks): Focuses on how life and water collection were handled in the city before the Carriedo water system was established, including historical wall panels and replicas of 19th-century water-filtration systems.
  • Gallery 2 (The Carriedo Waterworks): Focuses on the history, construction, and operation of the Carriedo water system.
  • Gallery 3 (The National Shrine / Artifacts Area): Features artifacts discovered during the site excavations, historical timelines, and related items.
  • Virtual Reality Room: A specialized exhibit space where guests can experience a simulation of the 1896 revolution.

In the forthcoming sections, we shall explore and reflect on these exhibit spaces in detail.
