Akbar is one of eleven (11) municipalities (along with one city) that comprise the province of Basilan in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. The town is politically subdivided into nine (9) barangays, and is a part of the Lone Congressional District of Basilan.

The nine (9) barangays that make up Akbar were formerly part of the municipality of Tuburan.
