Al-Barka is one of eleven (11) municipalities (along with one city) that comprise the province of Basilan in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. The town is politically subdivided into sixteen (16) barangays, and is a part of the Lone Congressional District of Basilan.

The sixteen (16) barangays that make up Al-Barka were formerly part of the municipality of Tipo-Tipo.
