Overview Tourism Quick Facts Geography Images

Panglima Sugala is one of eleven (11) municipalities comprising the province of Tawi-Tawi in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region ( BARMM ). The town is politically subdivided into seventeen (17) barangays, and is a part of the Lone Congressional District of Tawi-Tawi.

Panglima Sugala is a group of islands adjacent to mainland Tawi-Tawi. The main island Batu-Batu has long served as a Philippine Naval Base, which explains the existence of a sizeable Christian community in a predominantly Moslem Sama population.

The natural resource of Panglima Sugala is the pride of the province. Researchers from other countries come to study the indigenous birds and other wildlife in the area. The local government spearheads the program of environmental preservation, making it unlawful to shoot birds, and even the fruit bats that visitors first see upon docking at the port of Batu-Batu.

Another pleasing sight is the existence of mangroves ~ almost 70 percent of the land area is still covered by forests, both upland and in the seashores.

Farming and fishing are the primary means of livelihood in the area. A public market was put up by the locla government to accommodate sellers from the various islands.

Panglima Sugala is the official capital of the province, although most of the provincial government’s buildings, including the capitol, are still situated in Bongao, the former capital.
