Recognized as the cradle of Islamic civilization in the Philippines, Simunul is the seat of Islam’s oldest mosque in the Philippines, the Sheik Karim- ul Makhdum Mosque which was built in 1380.
This paved the way for the Islamization of the other regions in Mindanao and the establishments of the Sultanate of Sulu, Maguindanao and Lanao.
