Steeped in history, the town traces its colonial roots back to the 16th century and renamed in honor of Filipino nationalist Wenceslao Vinzons, a prominent leader, patriot, and one of the first Filipinos to organize a guerrilla movement against the Japanese invasion during World War II.

A center of heritage, Vinzons is home to St. Peter the Apostle Parish Church, founded in 1611, and recognized as the oldest church in the province.

Whether you are enticed by the soft sands of unspoiled islands, or ancient places of worship, or the inspiring stories of a local hero, Vinzons serves as an essential stop in the Bicol region, presenting an unforgettable experience for those in search of culture and adventure.

Key Attractions and Activities

The town of Vinzons features a harmonious blend of breathtaking natural beauty and a vibrant history.

The Crown Jewel: Calaguas Islands

Vinzons serves as the primary gateway to the Calaguas Islands, renowned for their untouched and picture-perfect beauty. What makes Calaguas so alluring lies in Mahabang Buhangin (Long Beach), a 2-kilometer stretch of incredibly white sand and turquoise waters on Tinaga Island.

Intentionally kept free from extensive commercialization, it remains an ideal location for camping beneath the stars and enjoying beach bonfires, situated about a 2-hour boat ride from the port at mainland Vinzons.

Religious Heritage: St. Peter the Apostle Church

Standing as a testament to the town’s longevity, this church is the oldest in Camarines Norte, established in 1611. Though much of its interior was devastated by a tragic fire in 2012, its architecture was meticulously restored to its original form and reopened in 2015.

The church’s key features include the distinctive Machuca tiles, beautifully crafted Kraut Art Glass windows, and the prominent niche in the central facade that holds the statue of St. Peter, who is revered as the patron saint of fishermen. Every year on June 29, locals get together to celebrate the grand feast of the parish’s patron, St. Peter.

The Legend of Wenceslao Vinzons

The town’s identity is inextricably linked to Wenceslao Vinzons, a guerrilla leader from WWII and the youngest delegate to the 1935 Constitutional Convention.

His ancestral two-story residence is recognized as a National Historical Landmark, showcasing memorabilia and serving as a public library. Celebrated as the “Father of Student Activism”, his courageous stand against Japanese forces, which ultimately led to his execution along with his family, remains a source of local pride.

Festivals

Festivals and cultural events, supported by the local tourism office, provide a window into the community’s enduring traditions and vibrant way of life.

  • Tacboan Festival: The main annual festival in the municipality, celebrated in late September to coincide with the birth anniversary of local hero Wenceslao Vinzons, and to commemorate his life and heroism.
  • Babakasin Festival: This festival is celebrated annually from June 24 to 29, honoring the town’s patron, St. Peter the Apostle, and promoting local culinary heritage.
  • Feast of the Three Kings: In January, Vinzons has a unique tradition where over a hundred local groups form “kingdoms” to celebrate the Feast of the Three Kings, serving as a community reunion and a festive end to the Christmas season.

Vinzons’ local markets, like the Vinzons Public Market, offer a rich array of fresh produce, seafood, handicrafts, and an immersive cultural experience.

Dining at local eateries allows visitors to savor authentic Bicolano fare while experiencing the warmth and hospitality that this coastal town is known for.

In summary, Vinzons transcends being merely a picturesque coastal town; it is a convergence of history, culture and natural beauty. From its ancient church and heritage landmarks to its unspoiled islands, every corner of Vinzons has a story to share. For travelers seeking an authentic Philippine experience away from overcrowded tourist spots, Vinzons is undeniably a viable option.
