Also referred to as Region V, Bicol is comprised of six provinces, namely Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon—each presenting a distinct mix of natural beauty, coastal allure, and cultural depth.

Legazpi City serves as the capital and administrative seat of the regional government.

Below is a breakdown of the must-see spots and top things to do across each province.

Albay: The Land of the Perfect Cone

Centered around the majestic Mayon Volcano, Albay offers historical landmarks and adventure trails.

  • Mayon Volcano: A near-perfect symmetrical cone dominating Albay’s skyline. Popular ways to experience Mayon include ATV tours through lava trails.
  • Cagsawa Ruins: The iconic 16th-century belfry that remains from a massive 1814 eruption, set against Mayon.
  • Sumlang Lake: A 9-hectare lake in Camalig where you can ride bamboo rafts with a view of the volcano.
  • Quitinday Hills and Nature Park: Often called “Albay’s Chocolate Hills”, these rolling mounds offer panoramic views of the countryside.
  • Ibalong Festival: A yearly event that pays tribute to Bicolano heroism, culture, and folklore. This festival commemorates the Ibalong Epic, which highlights three legendary heroes—Baltog, Handyong, and Bantong—who protected the region from mythical beings.
Camarines Norte: Surfing and Pristine Shores

Known for its long stretches of beach and "unplugged" island experiences.

  • Calaguas Islands: Specifically Mahabang Buhangin, renowned for its powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
  • Bagasbas Beach: A premier destination for surfing and kiteboarding due to its consistent waves and sandy bottom.
  • Mercedes Group of Islands: A set of seven islands, including Apuao Grande, known for its pine-like Agoho trees and sandbars.
Camarines Sur: Adventure and Pilgrimage

This province is the regional center for water sports and religious heritage.

  • Caramoan: A rugged, hilly peninsula comprising a cluster of islands with majestic limestone cliffs and white sand beaches stretching into the sea, perfect for an island hopping get-away. Key islands include Lahos and Matukad, home to the Caramoan National Park.
  • Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Peñafrancia: One of the largest Marian pilgrimage sites in Asia.
  • CamSur Watersports Complex: A world-class cable park for wakeboarding and other water activities.
  • Panicuason Hot Springs Resort: Located at the foot of Mt. Isarog, offering varying pool temperatures in a lush forest setting.
  • Peñafrancia Festival: Recognized as Asia’s largest annual Marian gathering, this festival is a celebration honoring Our Lady of Peñafrancia (affectionately known as Ina), the patroness of Bicolandia. It features a festive month-long celebration, opening with a historic Translacion procession and culminating in a dramatic Fluvial Procession on the Naga River.
Catanduanes: The Happy Island

An island province characterized by secluded beaches, rugged coastlines, and limestone cliffs, ideal for those seeking off-the-grid adventures.

  • Binurong Point: Spectacular sea-facing cliffs that offer a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean.

Bicolanos are known for their warmth and tenacity, which is evident in their bold, spicy cuisine. Signature dishes such as Bicol Express and Laing combine coconut milk, chili, and local produce to create unforgettable flavors.

In terms of lodging, Bicol offers a wide variety of options, from the luxurious island escape of Misibis Bay Resort in Albay to budget-friendly homestays in whale-shark-watching hubs like Donsol.
