Casa Gorordo: A Glimpse into Cebu’s Colonial Past

Situated in the historic Parian district of Cebu City, Casa Gorordo is a historic house museum that provides insight into Filipino life during the 19th century.

Originally built in the mid-1800s by Alejandro Reynes y Rosales, the property was later purchased by a Spanish merchant named Isidro Gorordo, which became the residence of the Gorordo family for four generations, including the first Filipino bishop of Cebu, Juan Gorordo.

The house was subsequently acquired by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) in 1979, renovated and enhanced, and opened to the public as a museum in 1983.

This well-preserved residence from the Spanish era exemplifies colonial architecture, featuring period furniture, artworks, and cultural artifacts that reflect the lifestyle of Cebu’s elite during the Spanish period.

The collection also includes religious relics and original items that highlight the culture and traditions of that time.

In 1991, it was recognized as a National Historical Landmark, a designation awarded by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

Visitors can explore the balay na tisa (house of coral stone and wood), traditional kitchen, prayer room, and beautiful courtyard garden.

Casa Gorordo also hosts exhibits, cultural events, and educational programs that celebrate Cebuano heritage. In addition, the site provides guided tours, and includes a cafe and a gift shop.
