Baluarte Zoo: A Wildlife Encounter in Vigan

Located just minutes away from the historic Calle Crisologo in Vigan, Baluarte Zoo provides an engaging and family-friendly wildlife experience, at minimal cost.

Spanning over a hundred hectares set amidst scenic rolling hills, a trip to this mini zoo offers an ideal retreat for animal enthusiasts and inquisitive travelers seeking a half-day escape into nature and local heritage.

While the entrance is free, guests can opt for a package that includes a shuttle service for a fee. This provides a convenient way to navigate around the vast park grounds, as well as exclusive access to certain attractions, such as the big cat enclosures.

This privately-owned sanctuary—founded by former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson—features a diverse collection of both native and exotic animals, including lions, tigers, camels, zebras, and giraffes. Many peacocks and ostriches roam freely on the property.

Baluarte provides several interactive animal experiences for an additional fee. These activities include photo opportunities with animals like snakes and the white tiger, feeding camels and deer, horseback riding, and petting various animals.

Informative animal shows are held daily, such as bird shows, providing both entertainment and insights about the park’s inhabitants. The zoo also features a butterfly farm, offering a tranquil spot for nature lovers.

Additionally, Baluarte includes a museum known as the Safari Gallery, which exhibits former Governor Singson’s extensive collection of taxidermied animals from his global hunting expeditions. While some may find the collection amusing, it is not advisable nor recommended for those who are sensitive to trophy hunting.
