Dive Into Wonder: Exploring Shimizu Island’s Vibrant Reefs

Shimizu Island is a small but picturesque tropical paradise located in Bacuit Bay, known for its impressive limestone cliffs, pristine white sand beaches, and a lively marine ecosystem.

Situated within the Bacuit Archipelago, about about 12 km away or a 45-minute boat journey from El Nido town, it serves as a prime location for snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing due to its soft white sand, calm turquoise waters, and abundant coral gardens teeming with tropical fish.

Typically included as a stop on the El Nido island-hopping Tour A, the island often serves as the designated location for beach picnics, where visitors can enjoy fresh grilled seafood and a traditional Filipino lunch served picnic-style right by the shore.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by dramatic, jagged limestone formations that contrast beautifully with the soft white sand and azure waters. Occasionally, large monitor lizards (often mistaken for Komodo dragons) can be spotted on the island, and the waters are abundant with various fish species.

Shimizu Island is often promoted as a must-visit destination when in El Nido, as it perfectly blends relaxation with adventure. Just a short distance from the shore, snorkelers can already encounter colorful reefs and schools of fish. The gentle waters are suitable for beginners, while the dramatic cliffs and secluded coves provide postcard-perfect scenery.

Note, though, that while the waters are generally calm, strong currents can occasionally be present in the snorkeling areas, so caution is advised.

The only way to reach the island is by booking an organized boat tour. Numerous operators offer joiner or private El Nido Tour A packages that include Shimizu Island, the Big Lagoon/Small Lagoon, and Seven Commando Beach.

The island was named in honor of a Japanese diver who tragically perished while exploring a nearby underwater tunnel and cave system.
