Lusong Gunboat and Coral Garden

Coron’s Underwater Treasure: Lusong Island’s Wreck and Coral Garden

The Lusong Gunboat Shipwreck and the nearby Lusong Coral Garden are two popular snorkeling and diving spots in Coron. The gunboat is a shallow Japanese shipwreck from World War II, encrusted with coral and teeming with marine life, while the adjacent coral garden features a vibrant and expansive coral reef with excellent visibility.

Both sites are located just off the southern coast of Lusong Island, about a 45-minute to an hour’s boat ride from Coron Town Proper. The waters surrounding the island serve as a habitat to diverse underwater species including corals, and various fishes.

Lusong Gunboat Wreck

Positioned just off the southeastern coast of Lusong Island, the Uruppu Maru, believed to be the name of the gunboat, was among several Japanese supply ships and submarine-chasers used for patrol and anti-aircraft defense during World War II.

It sunk in Coron Bay during a major U.S. aerial assault on September 24, 1944, as the vessel and several other gunships were retreating from the American offensive, and now rests just beneath the surface, making it a popular historical as well as a recreational site.

The 10-meter shipwreck is one of the easiest wrecks to explore, as part of the ship is situated in shallow waters, making it highly accessible for all skill levels, from snorkelers to freedivers and scuba divers. The wreck descends from a depth of around 5 meters at the bow to 14-15 meters at the stern.

What remains of the gunboat has transformed into an artificial reef, heavily covered in hard and soft corals, sponges, and barnacles, attracting a diverse array of marine life including parrotfish, lionfish, damselfish, and nudibranchs.

The water is crystal clear, providing excellent visibility for underwater photography. At low tide, a section of the stern may even emerge above the surface.

Lusong Coral Garden

Situated just off the southwestern coast of Lusong Island, just a few minutes’ boat ride from the shipwreck site, the Lusong Coral Garden is highly regarded as one of the best snorkeling sites in Coron, renowned for its extensive, healthy, and vibrant coral formations.

It is known for its crystal-clear waters and a diverse array of coral that flourishes along a drop-off wall. The area’s natural currents deliver nutrient-rich waters that sustain the abundant marine biodiversity, and provide a unique “drift snorkeling” experience that enables visitors to glide effortlessly along the reef.

While the coral garden thrives due to the strong currents, which also enhance visibility, it may pose challenges and risks for novice and inexperienced swimmers. For utmost safety, consider snorkeling with a local guide who is knowledgeable about the area.

Besides the abundance of corals, visitors often encounter sea turtles grazing, along with a multitude of tropical fish species. Clams are also prevalent at the mid-southern shore of Lusong Island.

Visiting

The most convenient way to visit is by booking a guided tour ( often referred to as Coron Tour D or Reefs and Wrecks Tour ), which typically includes both sites, in addition to East Tangat Wreck and a stop at Pass Island.

These locations are less crowded than Coron’s renowned lagoons, providing a more tranquil snorkeling and diving experience.

The optimal time to visit is during the dry season, from November to May, when the weather is more stable and water clarity is at its best.

If you plan to visit Coron, the Lusong Gunboat presents an intriguing blend of WWII history and marine life, while the Lusong Coral Garden offers some of the most vibrant snorkeling experiences in Palawan. Together, they create an unforgettable combination for divers and snorkelers alike.
