Nestled in the heart of Naga City, the historic Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia Shrine stands as a beacon of faith and heritage for the Bicolano people.
This sacred structure originally housed the revered image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the patroness of Bicol, before the image was transferred to the Minore Basilica de Peñafrancia across the Naga River, to accommodate increasing number of devotees.
Each September, the Shrine becomes the focal point of the Peñafrancia Festival, as it marks the starting point of the Traslacion, or the transfer of the Image of Ina (Our Mother), from the Peñafrancia Shrine to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral. On the last day of the festivities, pilgrims flood the city to witness the awe-inspiring fluvial procession, as the image of the Virgin is gently ferried back along the Naga River amidst hymns and prayers.
Beyond its religious significance, the original Shrine reflects the resilience and artistry of Filipino architecture. Its belfry towers over a well-kept compound where stories of faith, family, and community come alive daily.
Whether you are a seeker of quiet reflection or an inquisitive traveler chasing the pulse of local traditions, the Peñafrancia Shrine offers a spiritual and cultural haven worth exploring.
