Paco Park

Paco Park: Manila’s Historic Sanctuary

Paco Park is a quaint and charming park located in the heart of Manila, originally established in the early 19th century as a burial site for Spanish nobility.

One of the oldest landmarks in Manila, its construction began in 1814 and served as a burial ground for victims of the cholera outbreak in the 1820s prior to its completion.

Notably, this cemetery became the temporary resting place of the Philippine national hero Dr. José Rizal shortly after his execution in 1896, before his remains were subsequently transferred to Luneta.

This site also served as the final resting place for the three martyred priests – Fathers Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora.

Today, it stands as a beautifully preserved circular park, surrounded by thick adobe walls and shaded by towering trees.

At its heart lies the Saint Pancratius Chapel, under the care of San Vicente de Paul Parish, which is a favored venue for Sunday masses and special milestones celebrations like weddings, pre-nuptial photoshoots, and other intimate gatherings.

The park’s serene ambiance and lush greenery make it a favorite spot for leisurely strolls, photography, and cultural events, such as the renowned “Paco Park Presents” classical concert series, a weekly fair held every Friday afternoon.

Covering an area of about 10,000 square meters, it was officially designated as a National Park in 1966. In 2015, the National Museum of the Philippines formally recognized Paco Park as one of the National Cultural Treasures and Important Cultural Properties.

Paco Park continues to serve as a peaceful retreat from the bustling city, offering visitors a glimpse into Manila’s colonial past and a space for reflection and relaxation.
